Counselling in Swindon - My approach
My belief is that people are essentially good and we all have an ability to grow emotionally, solve our problems and achieve our potential. However when things go wrong in our lives and we experience something that is negative we can become stuck, fearful, frustrated and lose hope.
My Counselling approach is predominately Person Centred, that means that I aim to create a safe environment where a person feels accepted, understood and respected. This allows people to voice their concerns safely and confidentially. Counselling cannot immediately change someone's situation but it can help to change the way we think about it and therefore reduce their anxiety. This allows people to normalize things, rebuild confidence and find solutions for the wa forward.
We are all products of our past and it is sometimes useful to look at events that have happened to us to understand why we view the world the way that we do. A trained counsellor can help us safely explore these past events and help us gain some insight into why we feel the way we do. Knowledge is power, and once insight is established it is like a light being switched on which gives us clarity and peace. Once we get into a calm space we can explore changing the way we think which in turn can give us some choice in the way that we feel and help us become happier.
Our thoughts about our future play a large part in how happy and confident we are in the present. Think of a time where we have just got a new job or achieved a goal that we have set ourselves. Remember how happy, secure, hopeful and optimistic we felt? That was because we experienced positive change and life was going our way.
Another therapy that I am passionate about is Solution-Focused Therapy as this concentrates on people finding solutions to their problems rather than dwelling on what is currently wrong with their lives. This is particularly effective when we are working with a short term counselling model of 6 sessions or less. The power of Solution Focused Therapy is that it allows us to notice what we are good at and build on it to help us move forward.
